Making the Difference- Friend of the Center
Steve Bowers
All of you know our next award winner- if not his name- his voice from the radio and the Prime Time Drive at 5 and 6 in the City, but Steve Bowers has given JCIL and West Tennessee much more than “news and weather” in the afternoon.
A quick search brings up a long list of the organizations that Steve has assist including: NAIA, Strikes for Tikes, American Heart Walk, JumpStart Jackson, Signature Chefs, Boys and Girls Club of Jackson, JACOA, the Red Cross, Aspell Recovery Center, Ayers Children’s Medical Center, the Jackson Chamber, The March of Dimes and the Therapy & Learning Center,
First Cumberland Presbyterian, The STAR Center, Jackson Madison County African American Chamber of Commerce, and JCIL.
From the early days of JCIL- Steve and Glen Barr-another “radio guy” would get on the air and spread the word about the ADA and the importance of Independent Living. JCIL has never had an event that Steve has not helped by being sure that Jackson knew it was going on.
For all that he has done- to help inform our community we present Steve Bowers with our
Making the Difference- Friend of the Center Award
Making the Difference- Volunteer Group of the Year
Home Depot- Jackson Store
This year John Manness from Home Depot reached out to JCIL – First by inviting us to their customer appreciation day- we do buy quite a few supplies for the 100+ home modification projects that we do each year. Then his second question was do you ever have a project that is too “BIG” for you that we might be able to be a part of.
The JCIL staff immediately knew who we wanted to ask Home Depot to help- Miss Betty.
Betty was paralyzed two decades ago in a domestic abuse assault-but that has not stopped her from being a great mother and strong role model for her children- but now she needed help to stay in her own home.
The first day that JCIL staff met with the Home Depot team to walk through the house it was like the Calvary had arrived! Where all we could see where obstacles and projects- they would calmly take some measurements and add it to their list.
When “Work Day” came- so did about 30 Home Depot angels-they call themselves associates- They installed new landscaping, floors, kitchen cabinets, paint, bath fixtures and a ramp that turned a house into a home
Ms. Betty said "I just want everyone to know how grateful I am."
